Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mission Bend Branch Library, 8421 Addicks Clodine Road in Houston, presents a variety of free children’s programs, Young Adult programs for teens, adult computer classes, and special events for people of all ages each month. SPECIAL EVENTS
“Food for Thought Cookbook Club” – Thursday, Mar 21; 3:00 pm, Conference Room. This month, the theme is “Irish Cooking.” Cooking enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels – from beginners to advanced — are invited to join. Those attending are welcome to bring their own cookbooks and recipes, or they may browse the library’s collection of cookbooks. Share tips, get ideas, and enjoy the camaraderie of other individuals who have an interest in cooking and good cuisine! Meets on the third Wednesday of every month; different cooking genres are explored each month.
“Genealogy 101” — Saturday, Mar 23, 10:30 am, Meeting Room. In this introductory program, beginning family-history researchers will learn how to start their research. Daniel Sample, manager of the library system’s Genealogy and Local History Department, will provide a basic introduction to many of the resources that are available to the beginning genealogical researcher in the department. Items that will be introduced include print resources, materials that are available on microfilm, and basic online tools such as the Ancestry.com and FamilySearch databases. Learn how to fill out basic genealogical forms and organize research, and hear about numerous resources and services for family-history exploration.

The book to be discussed is Big Little Lies, written by Liane Moriarty. New members invited to attend!
ESL CONVERSATION CIRCLES – Wednesdays, Mar 6, 13, 20, 27; 1:30-2:30 pm; Conference Room; presented in English.
Fort Bend County Libraries offers a program for individuals of all nationalities who would like a place to practice their English language and conversation skills. The “Conversation Circles” provide an opportunity for non-English-speaking people to gather in a relaxed setting, and discuss topics of their own choosing while practicing their English skills.

3D Printing Class (Reservations required)
Introduction to 3D Printing – Saturday, Mar 16, 10:30 am-12:00 noon, Computer Lab. Library staff will introduce the 3D printer and explain how library patrons can print their own designs. Those attending the session will also learn about free websites that can be used to find 3D files or to create their own 3D designs. Prior to the class, attendees are encouraged to create an account with Tinkercad at https://www.tinkercad.com.
YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMS (for teens in grades 9-12)
- “Youth Art Month” – Mar 1-31. In celebration of Youth Art Month, artwork created by local high school students will be on display.
- Young Adult Book Club – Tuesday, Mar 5, 4:00-5:00 pm, Conference Room. Teen readers in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to meet with others who share the same love for great books, and have a lively discussion on the reasons a book or its characters were liked or disliked. Those attending the book-club meeting in March are invited to talk about any book of their choosing.
- Young Adult Advisory Council – Tuesday, Mar 19, 4:00-5:00 pm, Conference Room. At this monthly meeting, teens in grades 9-12 are invited to express ideas, organize upcoming activities, and suggest new programs and books that would be of interest to young adults at the library. Earn volunteer/service hours and meet new friends while helping to shape the future of library services for teens!
CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
Mother Goose Time – Thursdays at 10:15 am – provides caregiver/infant multisensory circle-time activities — including simple sign language, folksongs and lullabies, and finger plays — that are especially designed to stimulate babies’ social, emotional, and physical development through rhythm and music. Mother Goose Time is intended for infants from age 1 month to 12 months.
Toddler Time – Wednesdays at 10:15 am – offers structured caregiver/child activities, stories and songs for older babies, from 1 to 3 years of age.
Story Time – Tuesdays at 10:15 am – presents stories, movies, and age-appropriate craft activities for children 3 to 6 years of age.
Pajama Night Story Time – Wednesdays at 6:30 pm – gives families an evening option for some activities presented during the day time.
After-School Breaks – 2nd and 4th Thursdays beginning at 4:15 pm. Crafts, movies, stories, and more for school-aged children in grades K through 5. The schedule for March is as follows:

Family Story Time – Saturday, Mar 9, 10:30 am, Meeting Room. Enjoy a morning of stories, songs, and activities for families with children of all ages.
Make & Take: Flextangles – Tuesday, Mar 12, 1:00 pm, Meeting Room. Part coloring activity and part origami, flextangles (aka kaleidocycles) are fun, mesmerizing toys that require geometric thinking and creativity to make!
Family Movie Day – Wednesday, Mar 13, 1:00 pm, Meeting Room. In this animated adventure film, video-game villain Wreck-It-Ralph must brave the Internet via a newly-installed Wi-Fi router in Litwak’s Arcade to help his friend Vanellope retrieve a piece to fix her Sugar Rush game. This movie is rated PG.
Escape from the Hidden Tomb – Saturday, Mar 16, 2:00 pm, Meeting Room. Students in grades 5 through 8 are challenged to retrieve an ancient artifact and escape a sealed mine containing gemstones, gold, and other lost treasures of Julius Caesar. Solve the clues or puzzles along the way, and overcome the dangers of the mines to make the ultimate escape! Registration required.
