The FFA Program at Hastings High School is already in full swing.
Raising animals requires a lot of hard work and dedication. However, the students who make this commitment learn valuable lessons and qualify for several scholarships.
One of the most valuable lessons learned is responsibility. Students must check on (feed, groom, clean up after) their animals twice a day. Students who fail to properly care for their animals can be disqualified and removed from the program.
There are so few students involved in FFA that there is only one club for three Alief high schools! (Hastings, Elsik and Taylor). FFA is over 80 years old.
Raising animals can get very expensive for the students and their parents! It costs about $2,000 for feed, boarding, supplies, vaccinations and entry fees to the Harris County and Texas State Fair.
Tax deductible donations are needed to help support the kids with the expenses. Donating and supporting this and other such projects is an investment in our future. Spending money to help lead today’s kids down the right path is much better than spending our tax dollars to support them in or out of jail because they took the wrong path in life.
Meet Brenda Jones and her Longhorn heifer, Phantom of the Opera! Brenda’s family are resident of a GMBAC Member HOA. Brenda plans to attend Texas A&M University and hopes to one day operate a camp for children that incorporates hippo-therapy (autistic children have been shown to benefit from programs that involve horses).
